Description | Station sign from St Mary's disused Underground station on Whitechapel road. St Mary's opened in 1884 but having never been highly used the station closed from 1938. In 1940, St Mary's was converted into a Second World War air raid shelter, but it suffered bomb damage. The station is now disused and used as an intervention point required for draught relief during operation by pulling air in and pushing it out when a train passes. This sign shows the entrance from number 100 Whitechapel road and the route to the platforms. The diagram indicates that the station platform is located 480m from Aldgate East station Westbound and 400m from Whitechapel station Eastbound. The sign was wall mounted prior to building works taking place at the disused station, but as the sign no longer reflects the escape route it had to be removed. |
