Description
A photo of the sensational scenes that took place during the first FA Cup Final at the new stadium at Wembley, during a match between West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers in 1923. Pictured here are players from both teams as they stand about whilst mounted police clear the pitch of spectators. A crowd of about 200,000 people fitted into a stadium built for 127,000. The spectators had crowded around the pitch up to the touchline, which made it difficult for players to observe the rules of the game. The match went on in spite of this, partly because of the good nature of the crowd and partly because of the efforts of the police, most famously P.C. George Scorey on his white horse, Billy. This white horse has become part of Wembley legend to the extent that the 1923 final is sometimes known as the 'White Horse Final'.
