Description | A female applicant in a hat and fur stole is interviewed for the position of conductor during the First World War. This photograph was probably taken in 1916. Working on the buses offered a good wage, but initially women conductors' wages were lower than those of the men they were replacing. However, after striking in 1918, conductors managed to win equal pay: £2-£3 per week. Men supported the women's bid for equal pay, not wishing the women's wages to undercut their own. |
