This summer until 1 September 2022, you can visit Green Journey, the Museum’s new interactive installation encouraging families to think about climate change, and the role of transport in creating a sustainable city.

Alongside the installation, we are running a series of workshops helping children aged 8-14 years to find out more about climate change, its impact on us, and the things that we can do to help London get to net zero by 2030. I’m the freelance educator who developed these workshops, so let me tell you what they are all about.

Climate Calling

As greenhouse gases trap more of the sun’s heat, the Earth is getting hotter. As well as global changes, such as crops failing and the melting of glaciers and sea ice, we can also see changes locally including flash floods in summer and warmer, wetter winters.

London is aiming to be net zero by 2030. That means that we’ll be removing as many greenhouse gases as we emit. London is already finding ways to reduce emissions and build green spaces but what can you do to help?

In the Climate Calling workshop running until the 4 August 2022, you can make your very own snakes and ladders-style boardgame with actions you and your family can take to help tackle the climate crisis. You can then take it home with you and play with your friends.

Future Innovators

Engineers are problem solvers who create change through innovative solutions. They designed the transport network you travelled on today, the bridges you went over and the paths you walked. Engineers are real-life superheroes who are already finding solutions to help London reach net zero including hydrogen, electric and hybrid buses and permeable pavements.

Do you like fixing things? To solve problems you might need practical skills but you’ll also need lots of imagination and creative skills. Can you think of a solution that no-one else has thought of before?

85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t even been invented yet and by that time there will be 500,000 new green jobs in London. In our Future Innovators workshops on selected dates between 6 and 18 August 2022, we’ll be thinking about what jobs you might be doing in the future and you’ll have a chance to create your own climate super hero with unique green skills.

Activate

You might not realise it yet, but you are already experts on initiating change! From having shorter showers and turning the lights off, to walking to school or taking the bus, you’re already doing fabulous things in your daily life that help London be a greener city.

Active travel is a great example of simple changes we can all make to help the environment. But what does it mean? Active travel involves moving our bodies and could be anything from using your wheelchair to rowing, cycling to roller booting or simply walking from A to B.

As Transport for London supports London to work towards being net zero by 2030, what pledges can you make? In the Activate workshop on selected dates between 20 August and 1 September 2022, you’ll be able to create your own set of Family Action Cards to help provide you and your family with inspiration to tackle the climate crisis.

On 3 and 4 August 2022, you can also join Mastercard’s Girls4Tech STEM workshops to learn about Cryptology and Big Data through fun, problem-solving games.

Our Green Journey workshops run every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday throughout the summer holidays and they are free with your museum ticket. Just drop in and join us!

Green Journey is part of our Climate Crossroads programme, sponsored by Mastercard, Mott MacDonald, Cubic Transportation Systems and Sopra Steria.
