In 2021, we launched our Climate Crossroads programme, imagining what a greener future for London could look like, and inspiring our visitors and all Londoners to take action, with the support of our programme sponsors Mott MacDonald, Mastercard, Cubic Transportation Systems and Sopra Steria.

To coincide with London Climate Action Week (25 June - 3 July 2022), we’re inviting families to explore sustainability and active travel at our Depot Open Days ‘Act-on It!’ on 2 and 3 July 2022. Here, we talk to Renesha Khakh and Jim Colvine to hear about how Mott MacDonald and Mastercard are helping to tackle climate change.

Hi Renesha and Jim, can you tell us what do your roles at Mott MacDonald and Mastercard entail?

Renesha: I plan and design transport routes in cities. I aim to make them safe and easy to use so that everybody can travel when and where they want to.

Jim: I lead a team of people working on Mastercard’s Priceless Planet global initiative. We find ways to help our customers tackle climate change through our products and services.

How do your jobs help tackle climate change?

Renesha: My job helps tackle climate change by encouraging people to walk, cycle and use the bus or train instead of driving. This makes our streets healthy and less polluted.

Jim: We are helping to raise enough money to plant 100 million trees by 2025. We have also created a carbon calculator for our customers. This means they can track the carbon footprint of any purchase they make with their Mastercard.

Renesha, can you tell us a little bit about Mott MacDonald work with Transport for London?

Mott MacDonald have been working with Transport for London to find 150 of the best places to put rapid chargers all over London. These chargers can charge the battery in an electric vehicle in 20 minutes. Rapid chargers are popping up all over London which means more and more people will be able to switch to an electric car.

Jim, can you share more details about your Priceless Planet initiative with our readers?

In 2020, Mastercard launched the Priceless Planet Coalition and committed to restoring 100 million trees in five years, in collaboration with our partners and together with Conservation International and World Resources Institute. The Priceless Planet Coalition has 18 restoration projects globally, ensuring we are able to maximize our climate, community and biodiversity commitments.
