How our café welcomes families
We are a family friendly café with facilities such as high chairs and baby changing units: please ask serving staff if you are short of nappies or wipes. Breastfeeding is welcome: just ask and we’ll be happy to bring you a glass of tap water. A bottle warmer is also available on request.
Canteen is on the upper floor above the main Museum entrance. There is lift access and adjacent toilets have baby change facilities. Our wifi is free to use.
We’re accredited: Canteen meets the new Kids in Museums Family Café Standard, meaning it is great for families.

Did you know
Canteen is named after the static and mobile canteens that used to cater for London Transport workers during the 1940s and 1950s. The cafe space has been designed to celebrate London Transport’s design legacy as one of the world’s most recognisable brands, and fitted out with moquette upholstery, posters and maps plus real tiles, seats and signs reclaimed from the Underground.
Some unusual items to look out for include light fittings that were never installed at Embankment station, wooden benches found in the basement of Wembley Park and Gloucester Road stations, and salvaged luggage racks from 1960s decommissioned trains.
Lower Deck cafe
Located on the ground floor of the Museum, the Lower Deck cafe is a great place to relax during a visit. It’s open on weekends all year round, and every day during school holidays.
Our ice cream cafe offers a selection of English homemade gelato, a range of freshly made sandwiches, snacks (including lunchboxes), and hot and cold drinks.
Picnic Area
In addition to Canteen and Lower Deck cafe, the Museum has a small indoor picnic area where you can eat your own packed lunches. This area is situated on the ground floor near the Lower Deck cafe.
There is a water fountain near the toilets on the ground floor, which you can use to refill your water bottles.
