Cap; Peaked cap as issued to Central Area bus staff, 1939-1968
Main details
Reference number | 1995/234 |

Description | This cap was fitted with a standard roundel badge (1997/12014) as of 06/01/1998. The edge of the crown is stiffened with wires. Stiffened caps were normally worn by conductors rather than drivers and during the late 1940s most staff were issued with unstiffened caps (Lawrence, 1989; 122). The plastic mock chin strap on this cap suggests a later date within the style's date range, although the inner headband is leather. This suggests a possible date from 1950s to 1968 (when the continental style was adopted). Many staff however continued to wear peaked caps after this date. |
