Description | Transport for London employs staff from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and the uniform is designed to take account of this. This turban is issued by London Underground Limited (L.U.L.) to be worn by male Sikh staff or by Muslim staff who wear turbans. It is made from fine navy-blue cotton and on the front is a roundel badge. It is thought that one of the first Sikhs to be employed by London Transport was Vishnu Sharma, who worked in 1957 as a bus conductor. Employment of Sikhs gradually increased during the 1960s, but many faced racial discrimination and difficulties with gaining promotion. |
