Description | From the beginning of September 1939, Blackout restrictions were applied throughout the country. In London this dramatically affected transport services. Buses had to run with reduced lighting and, in some cases, services were restricted or withdrawn altogether to save fuel. This small, hand-held lamp was used by bus conductor Mr Harry H Hill during the Blackouts. It seems to have been modified from a vehicle lamp, so is not standard issue. Bus headlights and interior lights were covered with cowls to restrict the light omitted, which made it difficult for staff and passengers to see. Timetables had to be revised, and rotas were arranged to restrict the length of time a man had to drive during the Blackout. |
