Description
During the Second World War, enemy bombs hit many of London Transport's bus garages, Underground stations, Underground lines and power plants. This war memorial records an incident at Elmers End Bus Garage in Beckenham on 18 July 1944. A direct hit by a V1 flying bomb killed 16 staff and destroyed 39 vehicles. Despite the devastation, bus services operated on schedule the following day. The garage was rebuilt and reopened in 1954. The memorial, which names the staff killed by the bomb, was positioned at the entrance. It was removed when the garage closed in 1986.
