Description | Staff from all areas of the Underground group volunteered to serve in the First World War. This brass plaque is a memorial to four men from the Audit Office who died during the war. G A Penney and A Lewis both served with 'C' company of London Rifles, E C Simmonds was with the Artists Rifles, and A Barlow served with the Wiltshire regiment. The Audit Office managed the financial operations of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London Ltd (U.E.R.L.) and kept audits of ticket sales and statistics. It was based at Electric Railway House above St James's Park station, later the site of 55 Broadway. |
