Description | 'Back Room Boys’ was a series of posters commissioned by London Transport during the Second World War. The title lends a certain irony to the series, as they also depict women carrying out the vital engineering and maintenance work formerly carried out by men. The layout, with a central image framed by an illustrated border, is reminiscent of a First World War poster series by Archibald Standish Hartrick. This poster depicts a woman operating a circuit breaker. The illustration in the background shows the main control room at Lots Road Power Station where this job would have been carried out. |
