Description | These men are assembling an aircraft engine nacelle (the part of the aircraft that holds the fuel, engines or equipment) at White City. Engine cowlings for Halifax bombers were also manufactured here. The White City exhibition halls were converted in 1942 by London Transport for the London Aircraft Production consortium. The Handley Page Halifax bombers were one of the best combat planes of the war, entering service in November 1940. They were also used to carry troops, as glider-tugs and as hospital planes. They went out of Royal Air Force service in 1952. |
