Description	From the 1950s, increasing road traffic made Piccadilly Circus very congested. One measure to combat this was the introduction of bus only lanes. These were experimented with in London from the late 1960s. In this picture, taken in 1973, two R.M.-type buses can be seen on the bus lane. In April that year, a contraflow had been introduced at Piccadilly to further improve traffic flow. To the left of this shot is the Shaftsbury memorial, topped by the statue of Eros. Originally it was on a traffic island at the centre of the circus. Later reorganisation of the road system at Piccadilly has changed the shape and location of the island.
