Description | Heathrow Central station was opened in 1977. The extension of the Piccadilly line was planned to serve the airport and partly funded by the British Airports Authority (BAA). BAA installed a series of wide subways connecting the concourse to all three of the terminal buildings. These included moving walkways, or 'travelators'. The station was equipped with closed circuit television and a public address system, and had special features to cater for foreign tourists. This picture shows two travellers using the electronic journey planner. This was an illuminated, computer-controlled machine showing the user how to reach any other Underground station. Instructions were given in English, French and German, but the machine was later withdrawn. |
