Description
Street scene depicting the junction of Holywell Street (to the left) and Wych Street (to the right) viewed from St Clement Danes in 1895. In the centre is "The Rising Sun" public house and Hill & Son's booksellers. White comments that Holywell Street was also known as "Booksellers Row", and was famous for its second hand bookshops. When demolished, White notes that most of the bookshops moved to Charing Cross Road. Holywell Street is fairly busy with people, and there is a fruit and vegetable stall just outside Hill & Sons.

    KINGSWAY-ALDWYCH IMPROVEMENT - DEMOLITIONS:

HOLYWELL ST. (left) and WYCH ST. (right), looking from St. Clement Danes, 1895. Holywell St., or Booksellers Row, was famous for its second-hand bookshops. Denny's, the Strand booksellers, also had a place here, at the western extremity. Among the second-hand shops was one that specialised in Black Letters, in musty old leather bindings. When Holywell St. was cleared away, many of the booksellers migrated to Charing Cross Road. Midway down Wych St., on the r.h. side, was New Inn. The eastern end of Aldwych, and Australia House now occupy the site of the eastern portion of the two streets. Carr's Restaurant (right) is now housed in a new building on approximately the same site.
