Description | Portrait photograph of the engineer Peter William Barlow (1809 - 1885). Barlow pioneered a method of tube tunnel excavation using a cylindrical cast iron tunneling shield. In 1870 he built the Tower Subway, a 475 yard long, 7 foot diameter tunnel under the river Thames. |
