Description
Specially-decorated tram car passing through Clapham on 15 May 1903, carrying the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary) on the opening of the first section of the LCC electrified tramway between Westminster and Tooting; the Prince can be seen on the top deck, waving his hat to the crowds lining both sides of the street. This is a festive occasion, with Union flags and other decorations in abundance.

Shops closed their doors and schoolchildren were given a holiday so that they could celebrate too. According to the Times hundreds of thousands of people participated in the event.
