Description | This photo was taken outside the London Transport (L.T.) Chiswick Works. Much of the factory there was converted to war work during the Second World War and was run by London Aircraft Production. Chiswick Works was a target for German bombers and on 10 October 1940 a number of incendiary bombs were dropped. Extensive damage was prevented by the action of the fire-fighting squads. A new fire station had been erected on the site as a precaution just before war was declared. Members of the Air Raid Precaution squad are shown here on a training drill in March 1941. Two men are running towards the camera with hoses; in the background another is turning on the water. |
