    Born in Jamaica, Donald Hinds came to England aged 21 in 1955 and started work for London Transport as a bus conductor at Brixton Garage. He also played cricket for Croydon Garage. He began writing for the West Indian Gazette, and between 1959 and 1963 broadcast on the BBC Caribbean Services.

    Donald left London Transport in January 1965 to pursue a career as a writer , teacher and historian. His first book `Journey to an Illusion: the West Indian in Britain' was published in 1966. The book reports on the experiences of West Indian immigrants to Britain, using interviews and some autobiography. It looks at different aspects of peoples' lives, their disillusionment with the 'mother country' and their experience of racial discrimination. The section on jobs includes his experiences working as a bus conductor and of recruitment by London Transport.
