Description
Model of McAlpine tunnelling machine, as used on construction of the Victoria line. This is a model of the tunnelling machine that was used in the construction of the Victoria line. Construction engineers Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd, who carried out the tunnelling work, devised the machine. The toothed rotating cutting head of this machine, scooped up the spoil and dropped it onto a conveyer belt as it dug the tunnel.
