Hi! I’m Hannah, one of the Museum’s School Learning Officers. With British Science Week coming up, from 5-14 March 2021, we’re excited to launch our brand new programme of virtual workshops and events for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 students on the themes of engineering and sustainability.

Collaboration and Partnerships

In the Schools team at London Transport Museum, we value collaboration and partnership working, as well as listening to and consulting with both learners and teachers.

Ahead of British Science Week 2021 we’ve been working with year six learners and their teachers from Mayfield Primary School to co-create and consult on the development of an exciting new workshop looking at sustainability and innovation for the future.

Through a series of online workshops and follow up activities, it has given us an amazing opportunity to harness the pupils knowledge, enthusiasm, questions and solutions to ensure we can create a workshop that’s as dynamic as possible. They have been our ultimate learning experts!

Future Engineers

As many as 65% of today’s learners will end up in jobs that don’t exist yet! They will be solving problems we don’t know we have and inventing products we don’t know we need. They will be our future engineers whether they are dreamers that think big, fixers who can identify problems, or planners who map out solutions.

Our workshops enable learners to step into an engineer’s shoes and start to think about different solutions for London’s transport problems. Our workshops develop skills such as problem solving and teamwork whilst encouraging imagination and creativity. We hope learners will get a taste for the opportunity they have to impact the world in which we live.

Innovation for the future

This year’s British Science Week is focused on the theme ‘Innovating for the Future’ and at London Transport Museum we are exploring how innovation could make our transport more sustainable in the future.

We’ll be talking to climate scientists and engineers about how we can change our transport behaviour to create positive change on our environment as well as harnessing learners’ imagination to create posters and bus designs for innovative travel.

Our approach is cross curricular with a strong STEM foundation supporting a range of curriculum areas including history, geography, design and technology.

How to take part in British Science Week

You can join us too! Throughout British Science Week we have an exciting programme of free digital activities for KS2 and KS3:

  • Panel discussions with scientists and engineers

  • Free downloadable resources

  • Virtual workshops

If you’re an Artsmark School or a teacher interested in finding out more about opportunities to partner and collaborate with us you can get in touch with us at [email protected].
